Spammers have resorted to sending PM's to people, posting comments on peoples profiles, adding links and other stuff to their own profiles and signatures, etc. Once they learn that a site doesn't allow those things, they tend to move on and so when someone signs up, it tends to be a real person instead of a spammer.
