Woman Buying TV Duped By Fake Sears Worker

Nov 21, 2007 1:27 pm US/Central

AURORA, Ill. (STNG) ― A woman attempting to buy a television in a west suburban department store was tricked into giving her money to a criminal.

Aurora police released images Wednesday of a man who posed as a Sears employee on Oct. 14 to steal nearly $1,600 from a shopper, according to Aurora police. (The image is at the upper right of this page.)

The woman inquired about a television she was interested in at the Sears in Westfield Fox Valley mall and the man told her it was valued at $1,566, according to a release from police release.

The faux-employee told the woman the store's registers were down, took her cash and gave her a hand-written receipt. The woman went to the loading dock to wait for the "employee" to bring the television out, but he never showed, the release said.

Sears Loss Prevention told police the man had been involved in similar hoaxes at other stores in the Chicagoland area, the release said.

Anyone with information should call Aurora police at (630) 801-6712 or Aurora Area Crime Stoppers at (630) 892-1000.

Yes, I feel sorry for that woman, because $1,500 is a lot of bread. But at the same time, she was stupid enough to believe the guy, so it's her own damn fault.
