Default XP settings gives you generic information, which is fine for most people. Sometimes more detailed information may be needed.

In the Windows registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System

DWORD: verbosestatus

set to 1 to enable verbose messages

DWORD: DisableStatusMessages

If set to 1, then verbosestatus has no affect.

With the verbose turned on, you will see messages such as "Playing logon sound" when you sign into Windows XP.
